Debi Chestnut ~ Bad Karma

Synopsis

When Zoey's uncle is found dead in his bathtub, police think it's an accidental overdose, but circumstances tell Zoey a different story. After inheriting her deceased uncle's home and black kitten, she moves in and catalogues his belongings, inadvertently piecing together clues to solve a crime her uncle had stumbled upon before his death. With a stalker following her every move, Zoey calls upon all her investigative skills to identify the killer before she becomes the next victim...

Review

I love a crime thriller, especially ones that are fast-paced and short.

Bad Karma ticked all of these boxes, but somehow still managed to be disappointing.

Our main character Zoey is shallow and arrogant. She's also incredibly stupid, continuing to wander into woods, cemeteries and abandoned buildings, despite being stalked by a serial killer… While she's smart enough to work things out (although the killer was painfully obvious), she also tells every man and his dog what she's discovered which is a little far-fetched…

Other characters lack depth and act in quite unnatural ways; presumably this is to cast suspicion on everyone, but it's just not believable. I feel like the author is setting us up for some hot and steamy passages in a later book - as all the men are good looking - but it feels unnecessary.

It is the first in the series, so no doubt the author will improve as the books continue and I would be tempted to try another one.

A good holiday read, but nothing profound or extraordinary.
