Igloria February 1 Chaos: When the present determines the future, but the approximate present does not approximately determine the future. ~ Edward Lorenz A lifetime seems unimaginable. A long time, best read about in stories (been in some of those). Can you believe I, too, promised a lifetime, un- dated until the universal endpoint (death)? Every mother with a child in her arms rushes out from the baptistry, wanting to get to heaven first— Groupthink in another one of its forms, masquerading as history. How susceptible we are, because we aren't invulnerable. If only we could promise the dusky blue Javan rhino it doesn't need to fear extinction; or the kakapo, the Irawaddy dolphin, the leatherback and loggerhead turtle. An owl flew into the room where mother was on her sickbed, and this was how she knew no one could pull her back into the earthly world. O feathered trail with its retinue of ghosts and phantoms to walk with in passage. O sad, querulous heart, forever wanting to be held and yet ravenous for solitude—have faith in the leaping salmon: they navigate upstream currents, return to the places of their birth. Of great upheavals, what happens on the cellular level vies for significance with mountain fires and winds whipping across the wilderness. If only xylographs in rings of ancient trees could speak, yarrow-bright and healing. If only there were more zones we could shelter with cascades of wings. Comment

And then others, you're sitting on the side of the road in Texas waiting for the police officer to issue you a warning for doing absolutely nothing. My paternal grandmother, Myrtle the Turtle Traffic Light, as my sister and I use to call her before dissolving into the sorts of giggles produced only by very young children, was the kind of woman who would absolutely have been a rule-breaker, a flapper, a radical feminist. She was a little bit wild, an assertive leader, who received surprisingly naughty letters from her future husband. Those letters have changed me (what is once seen cannot ever be unseen) in ways that are probably not for the better. I think I'd have preferred to see her letters instead of his but apparently men of that era were less inclined to keep love letters tied in a bundle. Many years ago, probably in the late 1970s, Grandma MtTTL took my sister and me to see a version of The Ink Spots perform at The Brown Derby, a long-ago restaurant in Erie. We were the only children in the audience and those elderly men were absolutely delighted to introduce us to the music that has influenced so many musicians who came after.  The Ink Spots profoundly proclaimed in one of their songs "Into every life, rain must fall." No one, in the history of forever, has been more right than they were in that song.  There's a thing – it's not X, Y. or Z. It could be an anomalous A or a blah, blah, blah. It's big and it's on my liver. By the time most of you read this, I will be in robotic surgery, after which I'll rest in some high-monitor unit of a hospital. I'll be lighter by 20% of my liver and grumpy. Neither of these would be normal for me; nor were they on my bingo card for 2024. See the above paragraphs for pithy wisdom about predicting your future. Why am I telling you mid-event? Why am I telling you at all? Why me? (Why not me?) There are no good answers to these or many other questions. I won't have access to technology for a few days and then I'll be using my initially limited energy to finish a project I've been working on. I will check in, though, to let you all know about life with less liver. Don't worry about me. I'm in good hands and in good spirits. And I'll have a cool scar to add to my collection. Maybe, if it's worth it, I'll write a blog about the experience.  Life is crazy some days.  Much love.  Comment Like You can also reply to this email to leave a comment.

The gist of her Throwback Thursday is to highlight one of your previously published book reviews. I love this idea as it brings to people's minds wonderful books they might have forgotten or not even heard of. For the Twists/Instructions for Throwback Thursday visit her here. I'm going to try and keep the same schedule she does, the Thursday before the first Saturday of every month, but you can link to her blog all month. I'd love to know if you join in. For my first #ThrowbackThursday post I have gone with a review I originally published on 1st February 2021. I can't believe it was three years ago I read this fabulous novel, it might be time for a reread. The Truth & Addy Loest by Kim Kelly This was a story I didn't want to end. As I got pulled deeper and deeper into Addy's story, drawing several parallels to some of my own struggles, I wanted to stay there with her as she dealt with those struggles, the stories her brain told her, the encounter with the woman who owned the curiosity shop, beautiful and tender-hearted Dan, her brother Nick and her ever grieving father. Addy is so like many broken parts of me, so many broken parts of many others, but she shines brightly even as she doesn't see it, even as she doubts everything about herself and thinks she is dying. As always Kim Kelly brings to the fore important issues, not just of then, but of now. The fight for women to be treated with respect and not as an object for a man to drool over or take advantage of, the fight to not be afraid. She deals with past injustices of the war, both WWI and WWII, and the effects felt generations on by those who come after and carry those memories in their cells. She touches on the need to hide who we are from those we love, to protect ourselves and them. How hard it was to be gay in the 80s, not that it is easier now for many, but as a society, it is much more accepted.
